ABOUT PANGEA

New developments in Africa

the story

New developments in Africa

We are proud of our relationship with the fantastic craftsmen who make our sculptures. Each piece is hand made from start to finish and takes hundreds of hours of work before it is shipped to the UK. The conditions in the workshop are quite basic and we are looking at ways to improve this situation through further investment and conversations with Moses and the team who take such great pains to make our fabulous sculptures.
Factory in nairobi
Pangea’s founder Ian Unsworth recently made one of his regular trips to Africa to see what he could do to improve things for the craftsmen. The result of this trip was an agreement that would see Moses loaning sufficient funds to purchase a suitable one acre site and build a new factory in Nairobi. The loan will be interest free and will enable Moses and the team to double the working space that they have currently and will also give the option for further expansion at a later date.

The new location will be chosen with care and is likely to be in a non-residential area so that the communities are not affected by the noise levels when sculptures are being produced. There is also the issue of securing a reliable electricity supply along with a good quality water supply and the associated drainage. The new factory will have a reinforced concrete floor and once it is completed Pangea will pay for the finishing and decorating of the new site.

The new factory will greatly improve working conditions for the craftsmen, providing them with better lighting, workbenches, fans, vices, new welding equipment and a whole range of new safety equipment, overalls and first aid supplies. Our goal with the new factory is to improve the welfare of the workforce and enable them to make improvements to the quality of our products and work more easily and efficiently on our beautiful sculptures.
