ABOUT PANGEA

The Nairobi Community

The Nairobi Community

The Nairobi community in Kenya where the Pangea sculptures are created is an integral part of the company and the starting point for the whole Pangea story. Born out of an idea for a community project as well as an admiration for the sculptures themselves, Ian Unsworth started Pangea Sculptures in 2014 and has seen the artisan workforce increase from 3 to 30 in order to keep up with the demand for these striking and lifelike animal sculptures. Head designer Moses has been able to reinvest into the business, and has created opportunities for other young artists to be trained to produce these beautiful animal sculptures which are all made by hand using recycled sheet metal and other recycled metal components. Moses has seen first-hand the difference that the project has made to his community and is committed to generating a supply of these charming sculptures to support his village and give the families a sustainable income.

With incredible skill Moses and his team breathe new life into the discarded metal, by designing authentic sculptures that are as magnificent as they are realistic. The frog chorus sculptures are not without a touch of whimsy, while the magnificent rhino looks as if it might charge at any moment such is the detail of its construction and stance.

It is wonderful to think that the production of these beautiful creatures is making such a difference to this small community, as well as attracting interest from art lovers worldwide who are looking for a unique piece with a real story to tell.

Pangea is proud to support the talented team of artisan craftsmen by making an investment in this community which now supports over 400 villagers; giving them training opportunities and bringing their beautifully created handmade sculptures to a wider audience. With plans for a new workshop and some different designs Pangea hopes to continue to make a real difference to this creative community in the years to come.
